Necsa environmental risk analysis

Environmental Impact Management Services (EIMS) is conducting the required activities to complete an environmental authorisation for the NECSA proposed water and effluent infrastructure upgrade at Pelindaba in the North-West Province . They subsequently requested Softchem to complete an environmental risk analysis to assess actual and potential risks that may result from the proposed infrastructure upgrade.

A site visit to NECSA was completed during February 2009 to investigate the actual area of assessment, during which time a brief ecological evaluation was also completed to provide site specific environmental background.

The environmental risk analysis completed for the proposed project found no overall environmental risk difference between certain proposed options (Nos 1, 7 or 8) and the final decision on the most suitable option can thus remain with selected Option 8. Based on current infrastructure and related piping systems' condition and the fact that the proposed activity is to take place in brownfield land, there is no impact of real importance to negate the proposed water and effluent infrastructure upgrade at NECSA; should recommended mitigating actions be implemented.
